How to Update Outlook Express versions 5+ to get your E-mail

  1. Open Outlook express, click on the Tools menu, then "Accounts..."
Tools >> Accounts... from Outlook express main
  2. This will bring up the Internet accounts window.

  3. Because we will be adding a new Mail account, we click on the account that needs to be updates (e.g., mail.crosscountryins.com), and click the Properties button.
    1. You can also double-click on the account name for the properties window.

  4. Each account name is the entire e-mail address, like info@crosscountryins.com.
  5. Many ISPs block the default POP3 Sending port (25) on domains other than their own. If you have difficulty sending mail, or cannot connect to the server, you will need to get the outgoing mail server and information from your ISP.
  6. Our server requires SMTP authentication to send mail.  You must check a box to use Authentication.  The instructions are below:

    1. Click on the "Advanced" tab to show the port information.  The incoming port should always be 110.  The outgoing port must be 25.
    2. NOTE: Un-Check the "Leave a copy of messages on server" checkbox.
Change the outgoing Port to 23
Once you have changed this, you should be able to send and receive your mail freely.

    3. There are several other items of interest in the other tabs, but they are personal preference, and will not be addressed by this tutorial.  You should explore them for yourself.
